Carniva Splendor  – Food Waste Segregation projection

Project Completion – June 2022

Carnival’s adoption of advanced bio-digester technology represents a significant environmental milestone, exceeding current maritime regulatory requirements. Without these systems, millions of pounds of unprocessed food waste would be lawfully discharged into the ocean beyond 12 nautical miles from shore, as permitted by international maritime law. By processing waste onboard, Carnival sets a new sustainability benchmark for the cruise industry.

Scope of Work
A comprehensive survey, feasibility analysis, and engineering design were executed to meet the client’s operational and environmental objectives. The solution included:

  • Installation of collection tanks integrated with band filters for solid separation.
  • Deployment of level sensors and automated control systems for efficient operation.
  • Precision-engineered piping networks to ensure seamless transfer of effluent.

System Operation
All food waste effluent generated by galley-based bio-digesters on upper decks is channeled through band filters for solid removal before entering collection tanks. The processed wastewater is then managed in compliance with environmental standards and discharged overboard beyond regulated limits, ensuring minimal ecological impact.

By combining innovative waste processing, advanced automation, and engineering expertise, this project underscores our commitment to sustainable maritime operations and positions the client at the forefront of eco-compliant cruise industry practices worldwide.
